Veterans Day Memorial

Veterans Day Memorial

Veterans Day Memorial. This brings up so many memories for me. My pop was a career Naval Officer and served in the Korean, World War 11 and Vietnam.

During the  Korean War and my mom and us three kids didn’t see Jack Wolfe for 30 months. I was the  lucky one with my father surviving battles and coming home to his family.

I was a navy brat and lived on military bases in the United States and in Japan. Living on the bases brought me  closer to those who served. There were young sailors, marines (boys) who helped us on the buses, at the stores and even at the movie theater. I was only 8 and loved to roller skate.  They would have special couples only dance sessions on a skate night, and these young sailors would ask me to dance.

I felt like a princess dancing with a handsome partner. I was like their little sister back home in the states. While dancing they talked about home and how missed their families.  This created more closeness with the military.

Taps were played every day on the base. All cars pulled to the side of the road out of respect and if you were walking, you stood at attention.

Whenever, I hear taps, I get all choked up because my dad was buried at sea off the U.S.S. Constellation in 1980. We received photos of the 21 gun salute ceremony, taps being played one last time and his ashes gently blowing in the breeze to the deep sea.

At Fort Rosecran’s military cemetery is a marker overlooking the ocean. It’s such a beautiful and somber place to be. So, so many people who gave their heart and lives are buried or remembered here.

God Bless America.
